A while back, I posed the question to you Gimleters about the idea of
purchasing a knock off Eames lounger. Thanks for the insight and comments....I took all of them to heart! At the time of that post, I had not yet made the "great reveal" regarding Project Baby Haynes 2011, so what I didn't tell y'all was that I was bandying about the idea of purchasing the Eames lounger (knockoff) for purposes of having a comfy spot for us to feed and rock the baby that would also transition to regular usage long after the baby no longer requires that kind of feeding and lounging (wah...they grow up so fast!)
What do you prefer, real ones or fake ones?
My practical side comes out regarding the purchasing of a glider or fancy rocker for purposes of feeding/rocking the baby for about 18 months at most. I know that many people truly swear by gliders, but many others say that they are a waste of money. I personally don't have a clue as I have never required one before, but I think that they are, overall, eyesores and the $850.00 (minimum) price tag makes me cringe.....especially for something that usually ends up just taking up space after its expiration date.
I am sorry, but this thing is the equivalent of a mini-van!
Very pretty from Serena and Lily, but not so sure about the short shelf life/$1,100.00 issue. I don't love it for that price.
So, enter my brilliant idea of the Eames lounger for our family room wherein we would purchase something that would be extra useful for baby feeding and lounging and then ultimately enjoyable long after. Well. Even after fortified by your comments, I was unable to convince Beau to go for it. He pretty much allows me free artistic reign over our house so when he says "ugh" or "no!" on something, I typically defer. For some reason, he cannot stand the aesthetic of the Eames. I will never understand.
Beau's aesthetic and choice for the winner.
I would not stop at his "no," of course. Rather, I decided to wow him with the comfort and beauty of the Eames lounger by taking him to our awesome DWR showroom this weekend. Well, something surprising happened. Beau became as giddy as I usually do over a piece of furniture. Not the Eames, of course. But, interestingly, the womb chair.
I love a womb chair as much as the next guy, but Beau was positively smitted with him. I explained that it was designed by Eero Saarinen as a chair that Florence Knoll could curl up in, and he did just that. So, do we have a winner? Quite possibly.
Here are some shots of the womb chair in action, particularly in more eclectic interiors like ours:
I actually found a decent amount of photos of parents tending to babies in womb chairs, but many of them seemed personal as they were on flickr. Some were also kind of revealing for Gimlet Nation's tender eyes as there were some "feeding" shots. Figured I would let you use your imagination.
Hmmmm....a womb for the little baby. And for us. Someone on a message board deemed it the "king of cozy." That excites me with the Fall approaching.
Cheers,
JSH
OMG, just a few nights ago at 4am I was rocking Ollie in our rocking chair and thinking, thank God we didn't go cheap and get a glider. 3 kids in 4.5 year, how many nights have I actually slept sitting up in this chair? It's most similar to the Serena and Lily you posted. It has an ottoman. It is a green and white typical nursery gingham fabric. Since the day we got it, I knew it would be recovered in a fab fabric and relocated to the perfect reading nook. I love it! I think it was right at $1,000 and worth every penny! This is not something to go cheap on. You spend too much time sitting in that chair!
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted a womb chair for a nursery! I think it's quite fitting;) Your blog is wonderful — I hope you and baby are doing well!
ReplyDeleteAnd for the record, you'll never catch this crew in a minivan;)
ReplyDeleteI love the womb chair!!! It's chic but perfectly suited for cuddling!! I am taking notes on all of your baby ideas for the day I need them!!!!
ReplyDeleteGo for the womb chair. As for rocking or gliding, according to SOME experts, this should be done more vigorously than in a chair anyway. So go for the cuddle. It's so much less cumbersome and useable later. How much are they? Should I get one for LCS?
ReplyDeleteDid Beau not suggest using the old recliner from Lil Harms?? I'm surprised!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, love the womb chair and I totally agree about the glider. I think Christine bought something similar to Serena and Lily that she liked and could be recovered.
I actually like the womb chair more too, go for it!
ReplyDeleteLoving womb chair!! If you are rocking, it will most likely be on your feet anyway! I think the most important feature of a glider/chair is comfort. That is all that matters. YOu will fall asleep in it with that baby so you don't want to wake up with a "crick in your neck" so to speak. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your insight, Gimleters! I am paying close attention...keep your comments and ideas coming!

I agree with Adrienne that rocking will likely be done on your feet. I say go for the womb chair and see if you even need anything else at all. Of course, I will always defer to the more aesthetic option; however, to note: I've made it through two infants sans glider (and didn't have a wild number of 'sleepless' nights due to the lack of one in my home, either).
ReplyDeleteanother vote for the womb chair! i really like it. we have a glider in sam's room - i was dying for the serena & lily rocker, but it was going to be too big for his tiny room, so we had to go w/ the glider. i don't hate it, but i don't love it, either. and focus group of one, but he prefers to be rocked when i am standing up, so yeah, not much rocking done in the mini van chair. ;)
ReplyDeleteHa Ha, Lynne! I would NEVER think that you would ever own anything resembling a mini van! :)
ReplyDeleteLove "the womb" and think it will look so fab in Chez Haynes.
ReplyDeleteIt's perfect!

Being mindful that I have absolutely no insight into the raising of tinsians; I say go with your gut on this one (and spend what you have to to get what you want) as you'll be spending some serious QT in this chair!
ReplyDeleteI was looking this type of information from a long time and finally i search this blog. Thanks a lot for sharing this info
