Extra! Extra! Ripped from the headlines

The Good:

First Weekend Schedule is out!
t minus 5 days until Jazziest.

The Bad:

This was a treat, considering that we spent all day on Saturday looking for a new car.  Depressing/Exciting becoming a two car family again!

The Great:

Okay, not a headline, but kind of a news alert.

I figured I would share the wealth of our storage unit with you gimleters pre-Craiglist.  We are selling this heavy mahogany armoire (we used it as a TV armoire in our old house).  We purchased it on Magazine Street five years ago for $900.00.  It is in pretty good shape, but has definitely been through multiple moves.  It has a large shelf to hold your television or clothes as well as a large drawer across the bottom. It is really beautiful and is, sadly, currently sitting in storage because we don't need it!  It could be yours (or one of your friend's) for $450.00 o/b/o.  I don't have exact dimensions, but Beau is 6'0" 5'10" Please spread the word!

More pics:

Diamond detail on the front door.

Dusty, but fine!  You can see the hole drilled for wires and the shelf.

Detail of the unique legs.

Now, another great item.  We are also selling this low console from Crate and Barrel.  It is in almost perfect condition.  It is also about five years old.  We purchased it for $400.00 (or maybe a bit more).  We are selling this cutie for $250.00 o.b.o.  It is a great tv console and/or bookshelf.  Again, we simply have nowhere to put it!  It is handsome and a great size...petite but holds a substantial amount of goods.

Two glass front doors swing open to reveal two shelves.

Just another lil shot.  The handles are a dark oil rubbed bronzey.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.  Pass along the good word to any friends who would be interested.   Both of these items are at a storage unit, so we would have to coordinate for you to see them.  Here's to deals and steals!

Cheers,

JSH

Fabu (real life) Furniture Friday

I love redoing antique (or just fug) furniture with fresh upholstery and paint, etc.  Many of the pieces in our home are oldies that have been recovered, repainted, or freshened in some way.  I will always show you good befores and afters, of course, both from my own home and those of others with whom I work to refresh their pieces.

Do you know what is even better than a great before and after of an antique?  A fab antique that is so timelessly fab that it doesn't even NEED to be reupholstered!  They are a rarity in my opinion as most really great vintage furni has at least one layer of date stamped fabric underneath (Laura Ashley, brown/orange polyester, tired boucle....you know those culprits!)

Imagine my (and Julie's) collective excitement when we walked into Amber's home to see this beaut.

The color in "real life" reads far more emeraldy than in this picture.
It is in PERFECT condition.

When asked where Amber purchased this bad boy, she told us, "An estate sale. One of the awesome ones."  'Nuf said.  It fits her family's traditional decor to a tee, but I could see him anywhere...perfectly classic lines!

Amber better watch her back.  I know where she lives, and it is close to me.  I may try to steal the fab sofa and, if forced,  re-upholster it in this (although, again, it is perfect as is!):

$7.99 a yard!

If you have pics of fab furniture that doesn't even need reupholstering, send it to me.  I am curious!

Cheers,
JSH

P.S.  Happy Friday!  I am completing an awesome/disgusting trifecta of restaurants this weekend.  I am on round two tonight.  Last night, Clancy's for Beau's b-day.  Tonight, Emeril's with my law school girls (courtesy of Mary's gift certificate...even better!).  Tomorrow, Lilette with my parents for Beau's b-day.  Gotta love Nola livin'.  Sometimes the over consumption is just beautifully wonderfully gross.

Burned.

It's official.  Spring Fever has struck and I am burned out.  Tired.  Uninspired.  Desperately seeking a recharge.

As such, it is the perfect time to start plotting/day dreaming/ playing online to find a perfect spot for the birthday boy and myself to get away from it all over Thanksgiving.  (For the past --gulp-- almost six years that we  have been married, we have tried to give ourselves a vacay instead of tangible anniversary gifts.  Overall, we have succeeded, but occasionally our efforts have been stymied by things like buying a new house, fixing an old house, twelve out of town weddings in one year, etc.)  Although we would love to take a summer vacation to our farflung destinations, we have discovered that Thanksgiving is the perfect time to escape because we already "get" two and a half days off of work, thereby allowing us to leave for a solid week and not miss very much.

Needless to say, I really think we have found the spot and here's to hoping it will happen (ie: booking it soon so it has to happen)!

Check out the brand spankin' new W Hotel in Vieques, PR.  Aside from the obvious fabulousness of both the actual W property as well as unspoiled Vieques itself, the quick (and affordable) flight is the selling point!  We don't have too much time to spend traveling on a flight...at this point in our lives, our jobs only allow us to spare so much travel time and, therefore, we want to just GET THERE ALREADY.

Private beach at W....for the days when it takes too much energy to lounge on the other nine beaches of Vieques.

Want. the. lounger. and. hanging. basket. chair. (and a drinkie poo!)

Lobby with view of sea.

Restaurant with view of sea...

Spa.

White sand, calm surf.

Had to include more of the agua!

Someone's shot of the colorful lounger from tripadvisor.  Now THAT is some fabu patio furni!

Let's hope this trip comes to fruition.

Speaking of the W in Vieques, it was featured on Rue La La today.  I was so excited and hoping for deals and steals.  Unfortunately, the special rate (three days in a mega room with a $200.00 resort credit) is only applicable through June.  For the drones like us, that is too last minute, but, if you can make it happen, the package really is a ridonk deal.

To allay my burn out and get us prepped for the vacay, I think we need this.

I actually really love this guy, but really have no where to put him.  Between Lamar and the peacock chair, I think we have enough rattan at 2-3-4.

We also need this.

Who doesn't secretly or not so secretly love a baby pool?  (Indie and me raising our paws/hands)
Beau, for being one of the least snobby/judgy people I know, is not so quiet in his belief that baby pools are of, um, questionable taste.  As long as it is in the backyard, right?  I swear I will not put it in the front yard for the fancy neighbors to see.

I mean, it is almost as nice as this...

Snap of the Turtle Inn's pool area...you better Belize it!
(Another luxurious spot that is accessed pretty quickly from the Southeast...you have to be comfortable with transport via minute puddle jumper to get there )

I hope some of these pics provided you with a much deserved mental vacay.  If you have any hotel snaps or reviews you think the gimleters would be interested to hear about, let me know.  I love a good travel photo or great hotel site, especially when the burn out is at high heat.

Cheers,

JSH

P.S.  Happy Birthday/Tax Day, Honey Bun!

Southfork

In my Comments, Gimleter, Emily, pointed out that I was remiss in featuring the greatest yellow and white awnings ever captured by television...those of Parker, Texas' grand dame, Southfork!

The gateway to drama, intrigue and beauty...

Cue Dallas introduction now.

For my French gimleters...

Okay, back to the exterior shots that spawned this post.

Note the awnings! And "my" patio furni!

The iconic pool.
Many a character (or corpse) was found thrown in the pool.

\
More of the awnings.

Dramatic shot of sunset at Southfork via flickr.

Wait.  I am going to ASSUME you know what I am even talking about.  If you do not, then you are very young and I am jealous.  If you do, let's continue.

Did you know that you can visit Southfork and even get married there?  (Maybe I should have extended my Dallas trip...)

Main entrance of the mansion.
"The most famous White House west of D.C."

Built in 1970, Southfork typifies the resurgence of the Georgian style in the 1970s and 80s.  I remember thinking that the pool and mansion at Southfork were so luxurious...the ultimate example of how the other half lived! In the era of the McMansion, however, Southfork is quite "small" at a mere 4,767 square feet.   The pool looks paltry these days when compared to the mini water parks people build in their backyards.

This crew is fay-ncy, though....nothing but the best for the Ewings!

Now, I am a purist and, because the interior shots were not actually filmed at Southfork, I am going to leave you only with the pics of the exterior and grounds.  Don't be disappointed though!  I am publicly calling upon the local (if not regional) Dallas expert, Emily, to do a post on Dallas style to educate all of us.  After all, she has some very exciting Dallas happenings going on in her life.

Cheers,
JSH

P.S.  Bonus points if you can tell me who shot J.R.

P.P.S.  EXTRA bonus points if you knew that Priscilla Presley had a bit part as Bobby's first love (pre-Pam, of course).

Earning my stripes

Nothing is more crisp and timeless than bold simple stripes outdoors.  Since I cannot have awnings or amazingly over the top curtains like this...

Novogratzes again.
"I die" for the porch light.

The delightful Colony Palms Hotel in Palmy S.

Lemonade Stand at the Parker.

Round Hill in Jamaica...take me there!

Viceroy umbrellas and cabanas.

I have implemented stripes into my outdoor decor in a tiny (and VERY affordable) fashion.  Courtney, proxy shopper extraordinaire, knew that I was on the hunt for the aforementioned bit o' stripes and sent me a text photograph from Ikea yesterday featuring this guy...

The Hallo cushion.  Um, $9.99.  Navy and white cabana stripe for my recently-painted yellow outdoor dining set.

Now.  This post was going to end here.  UNTIL, I get an email from my friend today with "DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS?" in the subject line and "WHY DIDN'T WE THINK OF THIS?" in the body.

These geniuses people will drive to Houston and bring your Ikea goods back to you (if you live in Nola, BR, or the Gulf Coast).  They charge 20% of your Ikea total if you buy up to $1,000.00 worth of goods and 15% of your Ikea total if you buy over $1,000.00 of merch.

No, no, I did know know about this.  [See the Lamar series here]

I will, however, be using this service if I am in desperate need of certain Ikea items  (Expedit shelves...more bath mats, scales, planters, outdoor loungers...) and want to deprive myself of Swedish fish and a 700 mile drive in a rental truck.

Cheers,

JSH

P.S.  Countdown begins til tax day and, oh, Beau's birthday too.
(Oldest lamest joke in the book is to call someone who was born on April 15 and tell them Happy Tax Day!)

Design Remind

Tonight is the premiere of Nine By Design, Bravo's newest show about the Novogratzes...

Mama and Daddy are designers and they have six (now seven) kiddies.

Here is a link to their design firm, Sixx Design, website.

Their fifth child's name is Five.
I cannot wait to watch!

Cheers,

JSH

These are a few of my favorite things....(Mad Men and New Orleans)

Well, well.  More magazine clips for you this week.  I was thrilled when I opened this month's Food and Wine.  There was talk of food and...wine, of course, as well as Mad Men and New Orleans.  I don't think it could have gotten any better!  (Sensory overload for me)

Bryan Batt, the darling Mad Man of Nola, wrote a great article about throwing a partay at his carriage house in Nola, highlighting some of his (and my!) fave spots.  The link to the arti is here, but I had to include the text for you lazy boneses out there.

Party at the carriage house.

A Madly Stylish Party in New Orleans

Actor Bryan Batt downs martini after martini on TV's 1960s-era Mad Men. He also loves having cocktails at home in New Orleans. He celebrates the city's great cocktails and great style with a party in his old carriage house.

By Bryan Batt

I love my job—or should I say jobs? For the past three years, I've worn the smartest early-1960s suits and skinny ties as Salvatore Romano on AMC's hit series Mad Men. A typical day on the set might require me to drink four or five martinis or Manhattans. Well, I'll admit, they aren't real drinks. A TV martini is water with an olive in it, and a TV Manhattan is tea with a maraschino cherry. I learned a valuable lesson while filming the pilot: Don't eat those cherries. After 50 takes and 50 cherries, red dye practically dripped from my ears.

My other job is in my hometown of New Orleans: I co-own a home-furnishings shop on Magazine Street called Hazelnut, which means I'm always on the hunt for beautiful design. I'm also constantly adding pieces to my own personal collection and using them for cocktail parties, like the one that appears on these pages.

My love of all things cocktail began long ago. I actually have a photograph of my grandmother giving me a silver mint julep cup for my second birthday. Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around my parents' soirees. At the age of five, I would walk through the crowd with an olive-skewered swizzle stick to dip into unsuspecting guests' drinks. Toward the end of the evening, I could often be found under the kitchen table making polite cocktail chitchat with an imaginary friend.

Bryan prepping for his bash.

These days, I get my cocktails at a fabulous new local spot called Cure. So I recently asked the owner and mixologist, Neal Bodenheimer, and chef, Jason McCullar, to cater a party at my turn-of-the-century carriage house. Creating the guest list was simple, too. New Orleans is the biggest "little town" in the country; I've often thought there are only six people here and the rest is done with mirrors. I made a few calls, my friends Margaret and Sallie Jones of Scriptura (who design the best stationery in town) did the invitations and the plans were underway.

Neal modernized a few classic cocktails, like the martini; in contrast to Mad Men's high-octane vodka version, his is a softer, more food-friendly mix of half gin, half vermouth. Jason prepared hors d'oeuvres that included a brilliant spin on New Orleans's classic shrimp remoulade. Proving that bartenders aren't the only ones who can experiment with spirits, he poached the shrimp in vermouth and swapped out the traditional mayonnaise-based dressing for a zippy, gingery dipping sauce. His paprika-smoked baby back ribs in a sherry-spiked glaze were terrific with Neal's French 75 cocktail, as well as with the Aria cava procured from my friends who own the Wine Institute of New Orleans (a.k.a. WINO). By the time we got to dessert, a rich chocolate tiramisu, there wasn't a dry glass in the house.

**Editor's note: I love WINO and think that it is one of the most delightful wine bars in Nola.

Up close shot of the Cure martini.

Okay, as if Bryan Batt, Mad Men references, and a party with champers (in Nola) aren't enough to make me convulse, Food and Wine also included a supplemental piece called "New Orleans' Best Design Street," referencing some great stops on Magazine Street.  Of course, I have discussed one of my fave shops, Hazelnut, on multiple occasions (have I ever mentioned that B.B. is co-owner?), but there are some other great spots included.   Here is the link to the slideshow.

There are some really special shops highlighted.   If you are visiting, some of the spots mentioned have walkable (if not five minute drivable) distances between them.

My personal faves include:

Perch:  One of my absolute favorite stores on Magazine.  You can ALWAYS find something fab there....whether a tiny giftie or some amazing piece of furniture that you have to save for, but will have forever.   Perfectly styled, perfectly edited...oh, and the nicest people (hi, Vamp!)  You can subscribe to Perch's blog here, which is a great read.  Giveaways, too.
GO to Perch.  You will not be disappointed.  (oh, and they also have a pretty nice selection of e-commerce, too, just if you cannot jump on a plane and head here tomorrow)

N + O:  I absolutely love love love the "look" and style of N + O.  Their art selection is one of the best on Mag, in my humble little opinion.  You can also hop over to Julie Neill's other store, Julie Neill, which is right next door for amazing design overload.  My favorite part about N + O/Julie Neill are the fab painters/faux finishers in the back though... (hi, Christine!)  GO to N + O and say hello.  You will not be disappointed.  They are super sweet and helpful and all around fun in there!

Hazelnut:  Of course.  Not much more needs to be said about how much I love every single item in the perfectly-edited Hazelnut.

I hope this post was edumecational for you.  One of my great passions is obviously New Orleans and, mostly, sharing it with you.  I always want visitors to be steered right and inspired by their time in our little corner of the world.  My main goal is to keep guests eating the best food they can eat, seeing the showstopper stores and sights, and, of course, knowing that there is more to Nola than blinking boobie beads! (unless you  solely want to know about where to find blinking boobie beads and then your wish is my command, of course!)

Cheers,
JSH

P.S.  Ladies and gents, the fan is still for sale....$40.00!
